TUCSON, Ariz. – The UA Skin Cancer Institute at the University of Arizona Cancer Center will present the eighth annual Melanoma Walk on Saturday, Nov. 4, on the UA Mall, 1209 E. University Blvd. Activities begin at 3 p.m. and the walk starts at 4:30 p.m.
The walk is family- and pet-friendly and includes prizes and giveaways, music, food, a silent auction and activities for kids. Registered participants will receive a “goody bag” and food. Before the walk, the UA Skin Cancer Institute will offer free screenings and spot checks from 2 to 4 p.m. — first come, first served. Visitors do not need to be registered for the event to receive free screenings.
“It’s a really fun and inspiring event,” said Lisa Quale, health educator at the Skin Cancer Institute. “And the screenings are great. We’ve identified several potential skin cancers over the years, and even a couple of melanomas! It’s been an effective screening for sure.”
Proceeds from the walk directly support melanoma research, community outreach, education and patient care in Arizona. The UA Skin Cancer Institute’s goal is to raise $75,000 to help fight melanoma.
Advance registration is $30 for adults, $15 for children ages 10 to 14, and free for children ages 9 or younger. Participants also may register as a “Skin Cancer Prevention Friend” (SPF) for $100, which provides one walk registration plus membership in the SPF program that supports the Institute’s prevention and cure activities.
Several teams already have started raising funds to fight melanoma. To register for Melanoma Walk 2017, join a team or make a donation toward this year’s fundraising efforts, please visit www.fightmelanomatoday.org.
Presenting sponsors for Melanoma Walk 2017 include Banana Boat and Desert Toyota.
“Melanoma Walk helps raise awareness of this deadly skin cancer, while giving those touched by melanoma and their loved ones a chance to come together and walk in support of fighting and curing melanoma,” said Quale. “The Walk also raises money to help us continue our work in melanoma research, prevention, education, patient support and community outreach. It’s a great afternoon, and a very uplifting experience.”
Founded in 2005, the UA Skin Cancer Institute at the UA Cancer Center is the only skin cancer organization of its kind that unites patient care, research, outreach and education into one entity. The UA Skin Cancer Institute serves as a model for community-based skin cancer research and care in the United States and relies solely on grants and donations for operation.
