Professional Bio:

Kenneth D Hatch, MD, graduated from The University of Nebraska School of Medicine in 1971. He performed his residency in obstetrics and gynecology and a fellowship in gynecologic oncology at The University of Alabama in Birmingham (UAB). In 1976 he joined the faculty at UAB and in 1986 was promoted to Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology and Director of Gynecologic Oncology. In 1990 he moved to The University of Arizona in Tucson to become Director of Gynecologic Oncology at the Arizona Cancer Center and Professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. He served as Chairman of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology from 1994 to 2004. Currently he is Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology.

Dr Hatch is currently President of the Society of Pelvic Surgeons and has served as the president of The Society of Gynecologic Oncologists in 2004 and The American Society of Colposcopy and Cervical Pathology in 1996-1998. He is a fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and the American College of Surgeons.

Dr Hatch is an associate editor of the Journal of Lower Genital Tract Disease and is an editorial journal reviewer for many medical publications, including, Gynecologic Oncology, Obstetrics and Gynecology, and The American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology. He has published three textbooks and 150 articles in peer review journals. He has contributed to seven textbooks in the area of gynecologic surgery and cancer.

His clinical activities center on surgical treatment of gynecologic cancers and reconstructive surgery for bladder prolapse. He emphasizes laparoscopic surgery, which leads to a markedly reduced rate of blood transfusions, shorter hospital stays, and faster return to full activity. He is also among the few surgeons who treat early stage cervical cancer by radical trachelectomy, thus allowing young women the potential for future fertility.

Summary of Research Activity:

I have decades of experience with gynecological procedures. I have worked with optical and bio-engineers for over 10 years, examining imaging markers of ovarian cancer and helping to translate optical imaging equipment to the clinic for pilot studies. I work with Dr. Barton on a current study examining laparoscopic volume holographic imaging of ovarian cancer in women, and have worked with her in the past on optical coherence tomography imaging of the ovary. I have also been engaged with Dr. Alberts in studies of karyometry of cervix and endometriu.
